Third Revolution’s planners gained planning permission in September 2023 for the development of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with ancillary infrastructure and biodiversity enhancements at the former Northern Gas Networks site at Clough Road in Hull.

The proposal has sufficient capacity to store up to 130MW of energy and is a key component of the low-carbon energy infrastructure required to achieve net zero carbon emissions in order to tackle climate change. BESS provide a means to store and generate energy – charging from the grid in periods of generation surplus and releasing electricity back instantly when energy demand is high.

The team secured consent on behalf of Gamcap on a cleared former industrial site within a flood plain close to the centre of Hull. The site is allocated for further industrial development and planning officers recognised the important role that energy infrastructure will play in securing the economic future of the city.

The decision was taken under delegated authority and TRP worked closely with officers to minimie the need for pre-commencement conditions.
